Work communications tool Slack is having problems, with a large number of its users unable to connect and use the macOS and iOS apps to send messages to others.

Not long after 9 am eastern time, near the start of the working day for many U.S.-based firms, Slack users started to encounter problems using the app on various platforms. Users were unable to log into the app, messages and files failed to send, and link previews and notifications were also problematic.

Slack acknowledged that it was “not loading for some users” at 9:25 am eastern time, explaining on its status page that it is “looking into the cause and will provide more information as soon as it’s available.”

While it is unclear how many people will be affected by the outage, it does seem to be a significant number of users. Complaints started to flood Twitter as Slack users couldn’t contact each other, while Down Detector recorded a spike of over 10,900 reports shortly after problems commenced.

Not all Slack users are affected, however. In the case of AppleInsider, most editorial staff haven’t experienced any issues, but one did encounter a failure when editing a message.

Slack has not offered a timeline for a fix, as it is still investigating the cause of the problem. It is also unclear if it is connected to smaller incidents that surfaced on Monday, converging connection issues, as well as problems typing and sending messages.
